Starting a Business in Portugal

Portugal offers favorable conditions for entrepreneurs, especially for digital nomads and freelancers. The country has special tax regimes and makes it relatively easy to start a business.

Company forms:

  • Trabalhador Independente (ENI): Sole proprietorship/freelance, fastest option
  • Unipessoal Lda: Sole proprietorship with limited liability
  • Sociedade Lda: Comparable to LLC

Tax regimes:

  • Simplified regime: Estimated costs (15-35% deduction)
  • Organized accounting: Real costs deductible

Steps:

  1. Apply for NIF
  2. Register with Segurança Social (NISS)
  3. Establish company via Empresa na Hora (1 day)
  4. Choose CAE code (activity code)
  5. Hire accountant
